Every hack is a two-panel argument that ends with the house winning. Filter by room, then steal the method.
The Four Minute Hob
Spray Grease Goblin, count to ninety while it foams, then wipe in one direction with a damp cloth. Buff dry. Never scrub a hot hob — heat sets the grease.
Fridge Reset Ritual
Empty one shelf at a time so nothing thaws. Warm water plus a drop of plant spray, dry immediately, then bicarb in an open jar at the back to hold the smell down.
Six Minute Bathroom
Spray everything wet first — loo, taps, screen — and let chemistry work while you do mirrors. Come back in order: glass, taps, sink, loo, floor. Never backwards.
Grout Comeback
Descale first, dry fully, then run the Grout Ghost pen along each line and leave it 30 minutes untouched. Two thin coats beat one thick one every time.
The No-Streak Mop
One capful per bucket, not three. Mop in an S pattern walking backwards, wring almost dry, and open a window. Streaks are leftover detergent, not dirt.
Hallway Grit Trap
Two mats — coarse outside, absorbent inside — cut floor wear massively. Vacuum the mats weekly or they become grit dispensers.
Towel Funk Autopsy
Skip softener, wash hot with oxygen powder, then a second rinse with a cup of white vinegar. Dry fully within four hours or the funk returns.
Stain Triage Rules
Grease loves warm water and enzymes. Protein — blood, egg, milk — sets in heat, so cold only. Blot, never rub, and always work from the outside in.
The Two Cloth Law
Cloth one carries the spray and lifts the dirt. Cloth two is bone dry and only buffs. Mixing the jobs is why windows haze. Work top to bottom, never in direct sun.
The oven door sandwich
Mix bicarb with a splash of water into a paste, spread on the inside glass, close the door and walk away for an hour. Wipe out with a damp cloth, then buff dry. No blade, no fumes.
Fridge shelf shuffle
Pull one shelf, wipe with warm soapy water, dry, restock front-to-back with oldest first. A nightly two minute habit beats a two hour Saturday.
The grout pencil trick
Oxygen bleach powder plus water into a thick paste. Paint it along the grout line, wait ten minutes, agitate with a toothbrush along the line, not across it. Rinse warm.
The squeegee law
Water left on glass is limescale in waiting. One squeegee pass top to bottom after each shower removes the water and the future job with it.
Two bucket method
Wash bucket holds solution, rinse bucket holds clean water. Rinse the mop before every re-dip so the solution stays clean and the floor dries streak free.
The lint-free finish
Two cloths, always. One damp with a weak solution to lift, one dry microfibre buffed in straight lines to finish. Work top to bottom so drips land on dirty glass.
Citrus vinegar jar
Fill a jar with lemon and orange peel, top with white vinegar, seal for two weeks, then strain and dilute one to one with water. Great on hard surfaces, keep it off stone and grout.
The two bucket law
Bucket one holds the solution, bucket two holds rinse water. Wring into the rinse bucket, never the clean one. Floors dry streak-free because you stop mopping with the grime you just lifted.
Dwell time rules all
Every cleaner has a dwell time — degreasers want 2-5 minutes, limescale gels want 10. Spray the whole zone first, work another surface, then come back. You use less product and scrub half as hard.
Top down, always
Gravity is unpaid labour. High dusting, then surfaces, then floors, then out the door. In a full house go room by room clockwise so you never re-enter a finished zone.
Cold water first
Blood, egg, milk and sweat set permanently in heat. Flush with cold, then enzyme, then wash warm. Save hot water for grease and oil only.
The dry cloth finish
Mist lightly, wipe side to side with the damp cloth, then buff dry immediately with a waffle-weave cloth. Never clean glass in direct sun — it dries before you buff.
Steam beats scrubbing
Hit grout with steam or a hot alkaline soak for 10 minutes, agitate with a stiff nylon brush in a figure eight, then rinse. Seal the grout after so the next clean takes a quarter of the time.
Dilution is profit
Buy concentrate by the gallon, dilute into labelled bottles with the ratio written on the side, and log the cost per bottle. Most crews cut chemical spend 60% in one month.
The never-mix rule
Never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar or any acid. One product, one job, ventilate every time and rinse a surface before switching chemistry.
The eight-side fold
Fold a microfibre cloth into quarters and flip to a fresh face when it loads up. You clean more surface per cloth and stop dragging grease across the counter.
The fifteen minute reset
Set a timer, carry a caddy and a bin bag, and do one clockwise loop: surfaces cleared, bins out, cushions squared, floors swept. Daily resets mean deep cleans stay rare.
